Actress and comedian Mo’Nique is accusing Netflix of color and gender bias after negotiations for her to do a comedy special didn't turn out too well. She posted a video on her Instagram account Friday explaining why she was upset and she's mad that Netflix paid her way less for her comedy special than it did for Amy Schumer’s.
In an Instagram post, she explained that Amy got offered $11 million for her special while she only got offered a mere $500,000.
Monique explained in the video below:
"I was offered a $500,000 deal last week to do a comedy special. However, Amy Schumer was offered $11 million; Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle, $20 million. Then Amy Schumer went back and renegotiated 2 more million dollars because she said, 'I shouldn’t get what the men are getting; they’re legends. However, I should get more,' and Netflix agreed."
So yeah, it sucks that Mo'Nique is getting paid less, $500,000 is kind of shitty compared to what the other comedians are making. Plus, Mo'Nique has won an Academy Award. But, maybe Netflix feels like Mo'Nique isn't as relevant as the other comedians??
Also, let's not forget that time she had her own talk show, The Mo'Nique Show, and it was reportedly canceled because she yelled and cursed out the BET staff. Plus, the time Mo'Nique slammed Oprah, Lee Daniels, and Tyler Perry, and claimed she was blackballed.
Look, I'm not sure how Netflix decides who is relevant or not or if Mo'Nique really is getting blackballed in Hollywood, but I will not boycott Netflix on Mo'Nique's behalf. I have my shows to watch on there: Dear White People, She's Gotta Have It, 13 Reasons Why, etc., and they're all coming out with a second season. Plus, I use someone else's login anyways.
