The protest, named a “Day Without Immigrants,” is meant to demonstrate how integral immigrants are to American businesses.
The movement, which originated in D.C., extends further than just closing shop for the day, the New York Times reports. Organizers ask anyone foreign-born living in the U.S. regardless of his or her legal status to also not shop to further show how vital immigrant consumer spending is to the country.#DayWithoutImmigrants Immigrants, WE GET THE JOB DONE! According to USA Today, immigrants and children of immigrants are also encouraged to skip school as part of the demonstration.
In Perth Amboy, NJ, several businesses will be supporting the event including taxi cab companies based in the city. These businesses will be closed or will curtail service, according to the city’s website.A #DayWithoutImmigrants means Senators & Senate staff couldn't get their coffee because immigrants are part of our everyday lives pic.twitter.com/Xyust1YsKR— Senator Bob Menendez (@SenatorMenendez) February 16, 2017
